​​What is Rotary?
Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards  in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. 

Rotary is the world's first service club. The first Rorary Club was founded in Chicago, IL on Februrary 23, 1905 by a lawyer, Paul Harris, and three of his friends. Weekly meetings were "rotated" among the founders.

Rotary is some 1.2 million service-minded men and women belonging to over 31,000 Rotary clubs in 166 nations around the world. 

Rotarians meet weekly for fellowship and interesting programs dealing with topics of local and global importance. Membership is by invitation and reflects a wide cross-section of community representation.

Rotarians plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs that touch people's lives in their local communities and our world community.

Rotary is the Rotaty Foundation, that each year provides some $90 million for international scholarships, cultural exchanges, and humanitatian projects--large and small-- that improve the quality of life for millions of people.

The Wood River Rotary Club
The Wood River Rotary was chartered in October 1929. Today, the Wood River Rotary Club has approximately 37 members. 
The Club participates in a variety of community service projects each year, including:
  • Dictionary Distribution- members visit area schools and deliver dictionaries to students
  • City Parades- club participates in annual Halloween parade
  • Salvation Army- volunteers ring bells to raise money for the Salvation Army each Christmas
  • Scholarships- club awards annual scholarships to both East Alton-Wood River and Roxana High Schools
  • Junior Rotarians- two students alternating months are chosen from East Alton-Wood River High School and Roxana High School to paraticipate in the Junior Rotarian program
  • Fund Raisers- for scholarship and other philonthropic organizations inclide: Golf Tournament, Mouse Races, BINGO nights, Trivia Night, Rotary Coffee Sales
  • Polio Eradication- club supports Rotary International efforts to eradicate polio from the face of the earth.

The Object of Rotary
To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST- the development of acquaintances as an opportunity for service
SECOND- high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society
THIRD- The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life
FOURTH- the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service

Four Avenues of Rotary Service:

  • Club Service
    • Providing service to the Rotary Club to enable it to run efficiently in the spirit of friendship
  • Vocational Service
    • Putting high standards of good conduct into practice in Rotatians' business and professional lives
  • Community Service
    • Identifying needs in the Rotary Club's community and addressing them with service projects
  • International Service
    • Working for  international uderstanding and peace by promoting goodwill between all people


The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, foodwill and peach through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
